In celebration of the Oscars ceremony (and all the Oscars parties) this weekend, I mixed up a cocktail to celebrate one of the best picture nominees, Amour, a French film (with an Austrian director). In fact, Amour has been nominated for five awards: Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Foriegn Film. If you have not seen this movie yet, try to catch it this weekend, before the ceremonies Sunday night. It is truly a beautiful film.
I wanted to re-create the classic cocktail for French Rose, a cocktail made popular during the art deco days of the 1920′s. The traditional French Rose cocktail is made with french vermouth, cherry brandy, and raspberry syrup, but I changed up the recipe by using Smirnoff’s new Iced Cake Vodka, cherry vanilla soda, basil leaves, and raspberry syrup. The result was Oscar-winning!
(Recipe is per glass)
- 2-3 Fresh Basil Leaves
- 2 Jiggers of Smirnoff Iced Cake Vodka
- Hansen’s Cherry Vanilla Creme Soda*
- 1 tsp. Raspberry Syrup
Place the freshly basil leaves in the bottom of an tall high ball glass. Add the Smirnoff Vodka, and using a muddler, smash the basil to release the basil oils. Add ice, and fill with the cherry vanilla soda. Add the raspberry syrup, and stir. Serve garnished with a cherry or two.
*I like to use Hansen’s All Natural soda because it does not have artificial coloring or flavor, so the taste is clean and fresh.
