The Poisoned Apple: A Halloween Cocktail With Cruzan Rum

We had our annual Halloween party Saturday night!  I always keep plenty of drinks on hand for the kids, such as sherbet punch, root beer, and water.  I also make one or two “adult-friendly” beverages for the parents.  Since I received a bottle of Cruzan® Orange Rum to review a few days earlier, I decided to use it and make a fun Halloween cocktail for our guests.

I discovered (in my taste research) that the Cruzan® Rum stands on its own in flavor.  It was smooth and lightly infused with the taste of orange.  It did not have the “artificial” taste so many flavored liquors have, nor was it a strong, overbearing taste…in fact, it tasted like someone fresh-squeezed a slice of orange into the bottle.   I thought about the many different ingredients I could use to make a fun Halloween cocktail, but finally decided to keep it simple, so I did not “take” away from the refreshing flavor of the orange.

I named the cocktail “The Poisoned Apple”, which was quite appropriate…as one of my guests confessed that “the cocktail was so delicious, it was dangerous!”  It was wickedly exquisite, refreshing and smooth.

My friends had fun mixing the cocktails with me…

Mix a batch up for your next Halloween party, but be careful that no one takes too big a “bite”.

  • 1 (64 oz) container of Apple Juice  (Don’t use apple cider, you want it to be clear, not clouded)
  • 2 c. (16 oz) Cruzan® Orange Rum
  • 2-3 Packages of Pop Rocks Candy
  • 2-3 Wedges of Lemon
  • 1 Tbsp. pomegranate blueberry juice (optional)

Fill an insulated pitcher with ice.  Mix the apple juice and Cruzan® Orange Rum together in the pitcher.  Open the Pop Rocks package and pour onto a small plate.  Wipe the rim of each cocktail glass with the lemon wedge, then dip into the plate of Pop Rocks, to coat the rim.    Carefully pour some of the cocktail into each glass and serve immediately.  If you want to make it look even more like a (red) poisoned apple, add 1 Tbsp pomegranate blueberry juice to the cocktail mix.  For an eery look, throw a chunk of dry ice in the pitcher, and watch it fog up!

Disclosure:  I received a sample bottle of Cruzan® Orange Rum to try,  but received no monetary compensation.   This recipe and my opinion is 100% my own.
